Is installing 2 web browsers on my computer wise?
Posted on February 26th, 2010 by admin
I currently have internet explorer 8, and I want to know what all the hype is about for google chrome. But I am worried installing 2 web browers on my windows vista os may confuse the system. I heard it is not a good idea to install 2 firewalls, or 2 anti virus programs so, is it wise to install 2 web browers?
Yes, it is a good idea to have a second browser. It’s nice to have an alternative browser when your other one is acting up. I like Mozilla Firefox because it is more secure for browsing and less likely to introduce viruses and malware.
And you are correct that it is not a good idea to install 2 antivirus programs and firewalls. However, this is not the case with Web browsers. You’re talking "apples and oranges" here.

it’s not good to install 2 firewall or 2 antivirus programs
because they will crush
but if you install more than 2 web browsers
it’s okay
like me i install
-IE 8
-Firefox 3.6
-Opera 10
my PC just fine

That’s correct about 2 firewalls or two active anti-virus programs (though you can have several scanners installed, that search & destroy only when you tell them to, or on a schedule), but having several browsers on one system isn’t a problem. However, only one will be considered your "default" browser: the browser that’s used to view HTML files by default. I have:
IE8
Safari
Opera
Firefox (my main browser)
installed and it hasn’t been a problem. They all work fine without stepping on each other.

I have about 6 browsers installed because I use them to view web sites in them for problems. My main browser is Firefox.
Firewalls should be limited to one. Virus programs can be as many as you want. I have 6 of them too. All are scheduled to do their scans at different days and times so there are no conflicts. I only allow ONE to run continuously to monitor incoming email/files and outgoing email. It, too, has its own schedule to run a full hard drive scan. I have run more than one virus scan program at the same time, but I do not recommend people to do that if they have no idea how to recover from a computer conflict.
No ONE program can keep their database updated enough for all the malware that’s out there.
Installing multiple browsers is no problem. Just be sure all the browsers you do not want to use as your default browser has the boxes uncheck for checking whether they are the default browser at load time Gets tiresome having that box pop up asking if you want to make such-and-such browser your default browser.

We run most of the browsers available on our computers, just for the sole purpose that when we’re building a web page, we have to test it across a different range of browsers to make sure that everything looks the same.
Google Chrome is a really fast browser, but still has it’s bugs here and there; for the most part, recommended.
