What is the best free performance web browser?

If you mean performance as in: starts up quickly, pages load fast etc. then I think you should go for Google Chrome. It is very fast to start up and loads up pages quickly. It has a nice clean interface as well as offering some really good features. You could also try Opera. If you mean performance as in: has loads of functions etc. then I think you should go for Firefox. It has an add-ons function, which means that you can do almost anything you want providing you can find an add-on for it.

Opera has the best performance in handling javascript, hands down.

Firefox is grossly overated by it’s fanboys…Internet Explorer 8 is just as fast.

Chrome is the fastest, but if you are more worried about getting viruses spyware etc, then Firefox is the safest,
Taking a look at the latest versions of Chrome & FF:
As of 1/26/10
Chrome 3 is rated "Highly critical"

Chrome 4 is rated "Less critical"

Firefox has zero open security holes now, so it’s rating is NA
